[The crows skip forward and look up at you Yotsuba. Cawwing and making fairly happy sounds]

They like you! See, they are really cute crows. But...Usagi-chan is afraid of them...

That's okay, birds are scary sometimes. They stole Yotsuba's tiara once, and owls!!

[Oh gosh owls. Not owls. They can turn their heads and stare at you.]

Owls...

You don't like owls, Yotsuba-chan? Why is that?

[Rei...doesn't have a problem with owls]

[Rather than tell Rei she'll try and demonstrate what owls do that scare her.

First she puts on the most evil glare she can... Which isn't all that evil given she's five and adorable. Next she starts turning her head around, as far as she can, before quickly spinning around and turning her head again. She repeats this until she's turned a full circle and then stomps her foot.]

That!! They do that!

Oh, they have big eyes, and turn their heads all the way around? That is really strange. But owls won't bother you too much during the day! and...you shouldn't be running around at night, you should be in bed sleeping!

But Yotsuba saw the owl during the day, at the zoo! Daddy said it liked Yotsuba but it just kept staaaring!! And then it flapped at Yotsuba!! ... I hid behind daddy.

Yotsuba-chan, have you thought that maybe it was staring because you were cute? Or because you were...staring at it?

[:|a] Dad said he thought it liked me. Maybe it was just saying hello. [...] It just say hello in a nicer way than flapping at Yotsuba like 'BWAH' all of a sudden!

It could be. But remember, birds can't speak like we can, so they have to do strange things to talk!

Do Deimos and Phobos do strange things too? [Turning to look at the crows.] Are you straaange?

[The birds look up at Yotsuba, quirk their heads to one side and quork]

I don't think they are strange, but...most people do.

Why, they look okay to Yotsuba... Do they turn their heads all the way around and flap their wings at people too?!

No...I think only owls can do that...

Why do people think they're strange if they don't do that then?

Crows...aren't well liked at home. They like to steal people's corn. And they make loud sounds.

Loud stuff is bad, especially in the morning when the loud things wake up Yotsuba and it isn't time to get up yet. Why do they steal corn, are they hungry? Feed them!

Crows are always hungry, Yotsuba-chan. I think maybe they'd eat even if they were full, so...they have to take corn.

Always hungry?! Crows eat a lot, they're going to get fat.

[But if they're always hungry then she should feed them. Taking another dango from the stick she sets it on the floor and then backs off, hiding behind Rei's legs to see what Phobos and Deimos do.]

They can get fat, yes. Thats why they fly around so much. Exercise

[She giggles as she watches the crows nudge the dango with their beaks. They are curious, but not interested]

Ohhh, but what if they get so fat they can't fly? Do they roll around instead? You can't be a bird if you can't fly.

[Their reaction is a little disappointing as Yotsuba had fully expected them to gulp down the dango in no time.]

They're not eating it....

Yotsuba-chan, have you ever seen birds eat candy?

[Now its Rei's turn to giggle, but she reaches into her miko robe's pocket and pulls out a small handful of seeds, offering them to Yotsuba]

Why don't you try offering them something they do like?

Ohhh they eat this stuff? Okay, Yotsuba can do it... You've gotta watch!

[With one hand Yotsuba scoops up some of the seeds and throws them at the crows.]

Meal time, eat up!!

[Of course the crows eat up, scratching and pecking at the ground]

See! You just have to give them the food they like!

Ohhh, so that's how it works.

[She keeps watching the crows until all the seeds are gone.]

They ate all of it, all of the seeds are gone! [...] Can I have some?

Seeds? Yotsuba-chan, they'll make you sick. You shouldn't eat them.
