There's no money here. Why don't we eat out every day, every single day? Back home we got some milk, it was really eckspensive! 600 yen, and it was good. But why don't we drink that milk here? If there's no money and everything is free then it would cost... No yen.

Yotsuba wants to go to a restaurant and eat today. Is that okay?

[For added effect her stomach starts to rumble.]

...It's really okay, right? Yotsuba wants to eat eyeball-fry. With a knife and fork! Even if it's still really cold it's a good idea, so everyone should come and eat with me.

Night lights don't keep anyone awake, daddy just turns them off when you get to sleep anyway so it's okay, don't worry!

Haunted? Does that really count? I mean, I know vampires used to live there -- but...

Daddy takes really good care of me and makes sure nothing bad happens. Yotsuba gives him about a ten.

What's a vampire? Are they frightened 'cos they live in haunted houses?

[After about twenty-three seconds of fork hockey Jack will sigh, lop off two shares of his pancakes, and distribute them between the little girl and the slayer. Yotsuba gets a noticeably bigger share.

Right. A vampire, child, is a thing that you are to stay far, far away from. Savvy? You are not to go near, ever. Never ever. If one pesters you, you are to tell myself and Buffy immediately. That is a rule.

[ she isn't keen on finding jack on her front step, near-drained. again. ]

Ohhh okay. If Yotsuba ever finds a vampire then Yotsuba will get the journal and scream 'AAAAH IT'S A VAMPIRE' and then you both will know and everything will be okay! Yotsuba will get really far away from the vampire first though, savvy?

[Pancakes with 'eyeball-fry'? Wow this is the best meal ever. Making quick work of that share of pancake.]

But then Buffy wouldn't know any sooner. Yotsuba could try one of those filter things and tell Buffy, and then tell everyone else by screaming 'AAAAH IT'S A VAMPIRE'!! Like that. But then Captain Jack would know after Buffy and that's what Yotsuba is meant to do... Oh, so it would be all good in the end. All good!

Aye. All good. [He toys with what is left of his pancakes.] Do you know what one looks like, girl?

No, see -- that's the problem. You can't know what one looks like. They could look like anyone.

[ because this is absolutely appropriate conversation for a kid. ]

[They could look like anyone huh? Sliding to the edge of the seat with a horrified look on her face.]

You two aren't vampires right?! If you are, who does Yotsuba shout to when I find out?

No. You aren't a vampire, are you?! But if I were, lass, it would be even worse for you than being around a pirate. More dangerous, even, then you sitting here with me now, if you can believe it.

Shout to Rupert Giles or James Norrington. That's who you'd shout to.

[ norrington? she mouthed the name with sudden surprise. god, no. she'd hate to see the admiral brutally killed just for trying to be helpful. ]

Or Melaka Fray. Or Derek Bliss. [ giles, at least, was right. so ] Giles, though. Yes on Giles.

And it's cool, Yotsuba. I know you're not a vampire. I can tell.

Ohhh, Yotsuba knows Giles! He's good at singing and we sang together and stuff about the time. That was really fun.

[Shuffling back into her seat now.]

But no, Yotsuba isn't a vampire, and neither are you two so it's okay! Everyone can be happy when there are no vampires around. Pirates aren't scary though, they're really cool!

[Oh, this reminds her of that time in the item shop with Buffy! She was his first mate, right?]

Yotsuba needs to ask you something! Can Yotsuba be your second mate! Ahoy captain! Savvy! Mooshpot!

[Norrington might not be a vampire hunter, but Jack will not underestimate the admiral's tactical prowess. Not when compared to his own, of course, but there's a reason the man made the rank of commodore at such a young age.]

Oh, aye, Giles is simply mountains of fun. And you're simply not scared enough of pirates, small girl. You should make more of an effort; you'll be safer, that way.

[There was a time not long before that Jack would have made Yotsuba Second Mate without giving it a second thought. She would have been instantly promoted. Now, though?]

For that reason, girl, I'm...not certain second mate is such a wonderful idea. Not at all at all.

[ chat this one out, darlings. buffy's a little too busy blue-screen-of-deathing over the image of giles hanging out with a kid. the singing? not so surprising. the ex-watcher has a set of pipes that are awfully impressive.

but...playing? with a child? a mini-person? her giles?

Giles is really fun! Yotsuba started singing, and then it was his turn to sing, and he kept singing and it was really good. Daddy could sing a little too, so it was like singing with daddy. If we were older. And had glasses!

[Trying her best to put more effort into being scared. In fact she's visibly shaking from trying to put in more of an effort, but nope, pirates are still cool.]

...If Yotsuba puts in more effort and is scared of pirates then can Yotsuba be second mate? [Waaait a second.] If Yotsuba is scared of pirates can we still be friends?

We are NOT friends. [Those words were spoken as harshly as Jack dares in a crowded restaurant to a small child.] Pirates cannot be friends with small children! Haven't you been listening?! Not safe. And not pirate-y.

[Not friends? Not even kind-of-friends? Ooh. That's... Upsetting. She had been under the impression that they might had been friends, seeing as she had been allowed to ride on his pony, feed it and such.]

It's not right for a pirate not to be pirate-y, Yotsuba understands.

[Clearing her plate quietly and leaving her knife and fork together neatly. Just going to sit here and wait for dessert now with her head down.]
