There's no money here. Why don't we eat out every day, every single day? Back home we got some milk, it was really eckspensive! 600 yen, and it was good. But why don't we drink that milk here? If there's no money and everything is free then it would cost... No yen.

Yotsuba wants to go to a restaurant and eat today. Is that okay?

[For added effect her stomach starts to rumble.]

...It's really okay, right? Yotsuba wants to eat eyeball-fry. With a knife and fork! Even if it's still really cold it's a good idea, so everyone should come and eat with me.

in a far less sullen undertone: ] I'll remember that next time I do you a favour and run your things through the wash at Seven, where we have civilized appliances and don't have to beat our clothing clean on rocks just offshore.

[Giving the picture a long hard stare, coupled with a sliver of drool dripping from her mouth, which she quickly mops up with her shirt.]

Can we have this? It looks really good and Yotsuba will eat all of it. Buffy can have some too, and Captain Jack, because sharing is good.

Aye. We can have it. But pirates don't share, tiny green-headed mackeral. [Damn it, now he doesn't have laundry perks from Buffy anymore? This is the worst breakfast ever.]

[ in the midst of trying to figure out whether buffy should be indignant on yotsuba's part for being called a mackerel, buffy decides to give a lesson in fine dining: ]

Okay. Yotsuba? The most important thing to keep in mind, while eating out, is to always leave room for dessert. The chocolate brownie sundae'll do just fine.

Yotsuba will save plenty of room then! Enough to eat a great, big brownie and savour every bite! Yum!

[But seeing as the pirate doesn't share...]

Captain Jack, Captain Jack! Are you gonna get your own then? You can't not have dessert, it's the best part of everything!

What's a mackerel?

[It's probably a GOOD sign to be called a mackeral when all's said and done. Jack goes on, hurriedly--almost manically--now focusing on the child to the exclusion of the slayer.]

A mackeral is a great dangerous creature what gnaws off the legs of bedroom furniture. Knew a man once what woke up each morning with an inch shaved off the bottom of his bedstead. He thought he were growing taller, but it was all the doing of the mackeral.

[ just. this. face. ]

Wooow, mackerals are scary. But Yotsuba doesn't eat the bottom of beds so no one will be getting taller.

[Not really following all of the story though she nods along the entire time as if she is.]

Don't put that coffin you made in your bedroom, in case a makeral gets to it!

[Oh thank Holy Heavens the pancakes are here. Jack pours syrup liberally over his.]

Erm. The coffin won't be going anywhere near my bedroom, girl.

Let's hope not. I'm so over grave-decor in the bedroom.

[ oh. she's not fighting fair. so buffy tucks into the meal instead. somehow, the kitchen interpreted her poor attempt at describing eyeball fry as meatloaf. have fun. ]

[This doesn't look like eyeball-fry. At all.

But having stuck her fork in and tried a little it doesn't seem to taste that bad, so Yotsuba will continue to eat her meatloaf-fry instead.]

You should put stars and moons in your bedroom, the night sky is really pretty.

[Oh how silly of her, forgetting her napkin like this. Unfolding a paper napkin on the table next to her and tucking it into the neck of her t-shirt. Now then, back to eating.]

I'm perfectly content with what I have in my bedroom, I'll have you know!

[Buffy that was such a low blow. Really. Especially after LEAVING HIM for making remarks about that vampire-love-life of yours.]

[ that's what you get for burying small children in the snow and apparently building coffins around them. what the heck? ]

Glow in the dark ones. Stars and moons. With sticky-tack. On the ceiling.

Glow in the dark?! Classy! Get some really big stickers and put them all around the room, then when it's dark it'll be like you're outside. Oh! And a night light!

[This is a great conversation about bedrooms and how to decorate them you know.]

That sounds really pretty, Yotsuba's room should be just like that.

I want nothing of the sort. I live in a large haunted house by the sea, child. Stars and moons would bugger the atmosphere.

[Maybe if he spins himself in a gruesome enough light, the child will go off any of her notions.]

But......your room. I suppose. I suppose they'd simply keep you awake at night, far past the right time to go to bed.

One thing I can be a hundred percent certain about, hmm? There's nothing wrong with a little bit of something to chase away the darkness. Sometimes that's how you keep from being kept awake.

[ best conversations about bedrooms and how to decorate them. ] He's lying, by the way. His attic has a great view of the stars. Perfect atmosphere.

Wait, so it's a haunted house with a view of the stars? Wooow, Yotsuba has very deep, mixed feelings about this. [...] It sounds scary! But really pretty and nice to be there too. Is that weird?!

Night lights don't keep anyone awake, daddy just turns them off when you get to sleep anyway so it's okay, don't worry!

[And the house isn't really haunted at all.]

[ this wins the pirate another searching glance. as someone who frequently ran hot and cold on those around her, it's impossible not to notice the contradictions in someone else's behaviour.

she at least attempts to inject a bit of levity by scheming to steal a bit-o-pancake off jack's plate. really, at this point? she needs the levity all on her lonesome. all this talk of dads and their responsibilities. ]

Haunted? Does that really count? I mean, I know vampires used to live there -- but...

Daddy takes really good care of me and makes sure nothing bad happens. Yotsuba gives him about a ten.

[Watching Buffy nab a bit of pancake and staring at her almost as though she committed some sort of crime or the like.

What's a vampire? Are they frightened 'cos they live in haunted houses?

[After about twenty-three seconds of fork hockey Jack will sigh, lop off two shares of his pancakes, and distribute them between the little girl and the slayer. Yotsuba gets a noticeably bigger share.

Buffy, stop poking holes in his scary stories. :|]

Right. A vampire, child, is a thing that you are to stay far, far away from. Savvy? You are not to go near, ever. Never ever. If one pesters you, you are to tell myself and Buffy immediately. That is a rule.

Jack's right. On every count. Except do try and tell me before you tell him.

[ she isn't keen on finding jack on her front step, near-drained. again. ]

Ohhh okay. If Yotsuba ever finds a vampire then Yotsuba will get the journal and scream 'AAAAH IT'S A VAMPIRE' and then you both will know and everything will be okay! Yotsuba will get really far away from the vampire first though, savvy?

[Pancakes with 'eyeball-fry'? Wow this is the best meal ever. Making quick work of that share of pancake.]

But then Buffy wouldn't know any sooner. Yotsuba could try one of those filter things and tell Buffy, and then tell everyone else by screaming 'AAAAH IT'S A VAMPIRE'!! Like that. But then Captain Jack would know after Buffy and that's what Yotsuba is meant to do... Oh, so it would be all good in the end. All good!

Aye. All good. [He toys with what is left of his pancakes.] Do you know what one looks like, girl?

No, see -- that's the problem. You can't know what one looks like. They could look like anyone.
